A conversation with our Master’s student, Myriam Antonaci, on her Erasmus+ experience at Friedrich-Alexander University (FAU), Germany

Q: Where are you currently staying, and what is the focus of your internship?
I’m currently in Erlangen, Germany, at Friedrich-Alexander University (FAU), hosted by the Institute of Biomaterials, led by Professor Aldo Boccaccini. My four-month internship focuses on learning how to use a 3D printer, writing G-code, and characterizing scaffolds by evaluating their mechanical properties, morphology, porosity, and degradation rate. The aim is to generate a scaffold that mimics bone affected by osteosarcoma – this is also the topic of my Master’s thesis.

Q: How does this project connect to your broader interests?
This internship aligns perfectly with my interests in biomaterials, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. It’s a great opportunity to deepen my practical skills while contributing to a meaningful research objective.

Q: How has life been outside the lab?
I’ve always dreamt of living in Germany, and this is exactly the kind of opportunity I was hoping for: combining lab work with discovering a new culture, habits, and people. One thing I found charming – everything is closed on Sundays! It’s a reminder of how much work-life balance is valued here. Sundays are just for coffee and friends.

Q: Any surprises about German culture?
Yes! Despite the traditional German cuisine, there’s a real love for Italian food. Italian restaurants and cafés are everywhere, and there’s a strong Italian community in Erlangen. You never really feel alone.
